Moderation Makes Wakie Safe & Happy
Wakie thrives by having active community members who help guide and enhance conversations. Those members are moderators. Moderators are regular members of Wakie who gain a Moderator Badge by demonstrating efficient activities. The mission of moderators is to make the community members feel comfortable and interested in a topic.
How Moderation Works
Moderators are friendly to everyone. They do not punish anyone. In situations where a member may act in violation of Wakie’s community expectations (see complete community guidelines here), the moderator’s job is to describe to the member why their action may be unwelcoming in the community and advise them how to avoid that behavior. These discussions occur mainly in private chats, in order to keep the public discussions clear of off-topic content. If a member continues to break Wakie community guidelines, the moderator may flag that member for review by the app administration. Continuous violations may lead to a permanent ban from Wakie.
Every community member can report a violation if content (topic, comment or someone’s profile picture) doesn’t meet community expectations. Our moderators attentively handle each report and define a type of violation. Afterwards our algorithm concludes on the next step. If the content creator had no violations before, they would notified of a warning. But if they already had violations, it may lead to a ban.
Bans
Bans are made only by our algorithm or by app administration. If a member refuses to meet our community expectations, it may lead to hidden or deleted content and potentially being banned from Wakie, from as little as 10 minutes to as much as a permanent ban.
Blocking
Blocks are done by individual members. Overall, Wakie is a system that lets people shape their own community of people. If you don’t want to interact with another person, you can block them, which means you won’t see them again and they won’t see you.
When someone gets blocked by an individual, they become a little less visible to other members similar to the one who blocked them. If someone gets blocked by too many people, they’ll eventually become invisible to a large subset of people, or potentially everyone, on Wakie. For example, if someone sends spam in direct messages to dozens of members and a lot of them block the sender, the person will receive a chat suspension - that means they will be able to make calls and create topics, but won’t be able to send personal messages for a while.
Moderator Responsibilities
- Encourage as many interesting topics as possible
- Be active contributors to discussions
- Keep discussions on-topic
- Help members express themselves
- Motivate newcomers to engage
- Invite knowledgeable members to join discussions that are related to their experience
- Warn members against an inappropriate behavior
- Check violation reports of community members and determine the type of violation
- When necessary, escalate violations of Wakie community expectations to app administration, that handles the case and decides whether a ban is appropriate or not
- Set a good example and gain respect of the community
